Are your employees’ hearts at risk?

According to the British Heart foundation, cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the nation’s single biggest killer, causing more than a quarter of all deaths in the UK – that’s an average of 435 people each day! But it’s not just a ‘man’s disease’. In fact, coronary heart disease kills more than twice as many women as breast cancer every year.

Employee stress at always on work culture

Furthermore, researchers have warned that the stress of constantly working and thinking about work can cause cardiovascular disease, with spikes in stress occuring when people interrupt their home time with work1.

How could your staff be affected?

Reasearch suggests that only a third (32%) of people in the UK has life insurance, and just one in ten (9%) have taken out critical illness cover.

Which begs the question – how would your employees cope in the event of the unexpected happening? Would they and their loved ones be financially secure if they were unable to work, or even worse died?

New Bereavement Support Payment

In addition, the current system of bereavement benefits, including Bereavement Payment, Bereavement Allowance and Widowed Parent’s Allowance, will be replaced with a new single Bereavement Support Payment, for new claims from April 2017.

Recipients with children can receive an initial payment of £3,500 and up to 18 subsequent monthly payments of £350, and those without children can receive an initial payment of £2,500 and up to 18 monthly payments of £100.

What can you do?

There are various ways that you could help your employees and they needn’t break the budget. This could include:

  • educating your staff about the risks and importance of appropriate cover
  • health screening to identify staff who are at risk of developing CVD to prevent issues arising
  • implementing appropriate protection policies
