Account Executive Benjamin Pritchard selected for 2019 World Rowing Championships

Jelf Account Executive Benjamin Pritchard has been selected as part of a 64-strong group to compete for Great Britain at the 2019 World Rowing Championships in Linz, Austria, this week (25 August - 1 September).

Ben has been at Jelf since October 2018 and everyone within the organisation has been following his progress very closely of late.

A life-changing cycling crash in September 2016 that left him paralysed from the ribcage down. Originially from Swansea, Ben started indoor rowing as part of his recovery while at Stoke Mandeville hospital.

A testing time of recovery and rehabilitation followed to get Ben where he is today, winning his first World Cup medal and about to make his World Championships debut.

The World Championships will be the first and primary opportunity to qualify for next year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo, which is Ben’s ultimate aim.

Ben will be heading to his first World Championships to race in the men’s PR1 single sculls, he has been given the nod following a fantastic season which saw him take home a bronze medal on his World Cup debut in Poznan.

On his selection, Ben told British Rowing: “I’ve really enjoyed this season. Being selected to represent Great Britain at the World Championships is the accumulation of two years of hard work.

“I’m looking forward to competing in Austria, seeing the progress that my coach Tom and I have made since Poznan and hopefully gaining a qualification spot for the Paralympic Games next year.”

Ben was chosen ahead of fellow GB rower Andrew Houghton for the World Championships.

He told the BBC: "I've got the weight of every PR1 male in the UK on my shoulders because if I don't qualify the boat then none of us can go to the Paralympics.

"It's going to be a tough challenge and a daunting task but one I hope to rise to and get that top seven finish.

"We've said the semi-final is going to be my race and try and secure that spot in the A final."

Everyone at Jelf would like to congratulate Ben on this fantastic achievement and we are all rooting for him to bring home the gold!
